The purpose of the survey is to collect information, views and opinions on the effectiveness, efficiency, coherence and relevance of the Sustainable Impact Assessment in support of free trade agreement (FTA) negotiations between the European Union and Malaysia. It further provides stakeholders with the opportunity to give feedback on the likely free trade agreement’s economic, social, environmental, and human rights impacts.
In September 2010, the EU and Malaysia launched negotiations for a free trade agreement. The negotiations have not yet been finalised. Malaysia is the EU’s third largest trading partner in ASEAN, trailing behind Singapore and Vietnam. The co-operation between the EU and Malaysia is ensured through the EU-ASEAN dialogue. An EU-Malaysia Free Trade Agreement is expected to benefit the trade of both the EU and Malaysia as it will expand their bilateral exports. The establishment of an FTA between the EU and Malaysia will enhance bilateral trade for both sides. This has a positive contribution to the development of the country as the export sector will have less regulatory barriers in exporting its products. The FTA is also expected to lead to an increase in FDI between the EU and Malaysia. In 2014, the EU outward stock of foreign direct investment was valued at €10.1 billion.
The Stakeholder Survey is one of multiple consultation activities carried out for the project to support the data analysis and literature review on the Sustainability Impact Assessment, and will allow the project team to reach out to a large number of stakeholders.
